Selection Process for Police Officer
The selection process for entry-level police officer consists of two phases:
Phase I: Written Test, Physical Assessment Test, Oral Board Interview and Writing Skills exercise.
Phase II: Background Investigation, Administrative Review, Medical, Psychological and Polygraph Examinations.
The Department makes all reasonable efforts to complete the process within 90 days of the initial test, however it may last up to 6 months.
Written Test
All test materials have been validated for content and adverse impact. Candidates not
achieving a passing score will be informed immediately that they are ineligible to
proceed further in the process.
Physical Assessment Test
Testing is based on entry-level standards used by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council (Cooper 40th percentile). They are:
-Push-ups, Sit-ups, Step-ups, Flexibility, Bench Press and a 1.5 mile run.
To pass the physical fitness test an applicant must complete each test by meeting or
exceeding the standard score.
Oral Board Interview
Applicants who pass both the Written Test and the Physical Fitness Test will be
scheduled to appear for an oral board interview. The Board consists of a minimum two full-time officers and a civilian. The interview will be rating candidates on verbal
expression and comprehension, reasoning and judgment, fluency of ideas; the candidate should take the opportunity to demonstrate a professional attitude and demeanor.
Report Writing Skills
Following the Oral Board, the Candidate will write a narrative report based on a scenario.
If a candidate fails any portion of PHASE I, the candidate will receive a letter informing them that a position cannot be offered; but they may apply at the next process, which is advertised in the local media and on-line at the Police Department's Website .
